WHAT IS WATER WORTH?
Hello friends and parents,
Naineisha is here today is here to publish something related to water. We know water is important but to understand the connection between water and our lives here is my friend, today's article is written by- Zaira Amjad
Water is a very important need for everyone on this planet. But most of us don't take this problem very seriously. Summer rain can mean fun in many places, but for many, it can mean survival. Water is fast becoming more precious than gold or oil. We don't have enough usable water for everyone. Most of the Earth's water is saltwater which we can't drink or use to water our crops. Only 3 per cent of Earth's water is fresh & most of that is locked away in polar ice caps, glaciers, or underground layers of rock.
It is very easy for rich countries to get water, but poor countries don't have enough money to dig wells or build dams. Today we humans can use only 1 per cent of Earth's freshwater. That 11 per cent is in short supply for 3 main reasons: POLLUTION, POPULATION & CLIMATE CHANGE.
Water pollution is a huge problem on many continents. In South America people have been dumping harmful chemicals into the Amazon River for years. In other poor areas where freshwater often goes untreated people are getting sick by consuming polluted water for cooking, bathing & drinking. Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the world, where 7 out of 10 people don't have clean water to drink. Research shows that today more than 1.1 billion people- Almost 1 in every 6 people in the world don't have enough clean water to drink. They live on less than 8 litres a day.
Climate change threatens the global water supply. It is predicted that by 2050 one 5th of the world's population may face serious water shortages as a result of climate change. Climate change results from too much carbon dioxide & other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere which is resulting in droughts, floods, melting of glaciers. Countries like Saudi Arabia are converting saltwater to freshwater in a process called DESALINATION but as this process is very expensive many countries can't afford it.
FACTS-
-More than 30 million people depend on the shrinking Colorado River- a source for 22 million people.
-Worldwide, more people have a mobile phone than a toilet.
WHAT CAN WE DO?
-Turn off the water when brushing your teeth.
-Take shorter showers.
-Turn off the hose when washing the car.
-Buy a rain barrel to store water for plants.
-Fix leaks and drips.
-Buy recycled or used stuff instead of new stuff.
-Eat less meat.
/SUGGESTION
We have to find ways to conserve this valuable resource. It's not just for our generation but for the ones yet to come.
